Find the home row

Place your left fingers on A S D F and your right fingers on J K L ;. Your thumbs rest on the space bar. Feel for the small bumps on F and J — they let your index fingers find home without looking. After every key you type, your finger returns to its home key.

Why the home row matters

Touch typing means every finger is responsible for a few keys, so your hands never have to search. All of those keys are measured from the home row. If your fingers drift away from it, every other key will feel uncertain. Spend as long as you need on this lesson — aim for 95% accuracy before moving on to lesson 2.

How this lesson works

Type each line exactly as shown. The next key lights up on the keyboard and the line below the text tells you which finger to use. A wrong key is counted as a mistake and the letter turns red, but you stay on it until you press the right key, so you always finish with correct muscle memory. Finish with 97% accuracy or better for three stars. Your best result is saved in this browser.

Frequently asked questions

Should I look at the keyboard?

Try not to. Use the on-screen keyboard to find the next key instead. Looking down feels faster at first but stops you from building muscle memory.

Which thumb presses the space bar?

Either one. Most people use the thumb of the hand that did not type the last letter, but using one thumb all the time is fine.

How long should I practice?

Ten to fifteen minutes a day is ideal. Repeat the lesson until you can type it with 95% accuracy without looking at your hands.
