What is touch typing?
Touch typing means typing with all ten fingers without looking at the keyboard. Each finger is responsible for a few keys and always returns to the same "home" position. Instead of searching for keys with your eyes, your fingers know where to go — which is why touch typists reach 60, 80 or even 100 words per minute while hunt-and-peck typists usually stay below 30.
How the lessons work
- Each lesson introduces a few new keys, outlined on the on-screen keyboard.
- The next key lights up and the finger to use is shown under the text.
- Keys are colored by finger, so you can see which keys each finger owns.
- You earn up to three stars based on accuracy. Aim for three before moving on.
A practice plan
Spend 15–20 minutes a day. Start each session by repeating the previous lesson once, then work on the next one. After lesson 4 you know every letter: from then on, add a daily 1-minute typing test to track your speed. Children can use the kids typing test and the Word Rain game for extra practice.
Good typing posture
- Sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor.
- Keep your elbows at about 90 degrees and your wrists straight, not bent up or down.
- The top of your screen should be at or slightly below eye level.
- Take a short break every 20–30 minutes to stretch your hands.
