AZERTY vs. QWERTY
French keyboards use the AZERTY layout, where A and Q, Z and W, and M are in different places, and numbers need Shift. The test simply checks the letters you type, so it works with any layout. If you learned on QWERTY and are switching to AZERTY, expect your speed to drop for a few weeks — that is normal.
Typing French accents
- AZERTY: é, è, à, ç and ù have their own keys; use the ^ dead key for â, ê, î, ô, û.
- Mac QWERTY: Option+E for é, Option+` for è, Option+I for circumflex, Option+C for ç.
- Windows US International: ' + e for é, ` + e for è, ^ + e for ê.
How your score is calculated
Every five correctly typed characters, including spaces, count as one word. Your WPM is the number of those words divided by the test length in minutes, so mistyped words do not count. Accuracy is the share of keys you pressed correctly. Read more about what your number means in our guide to the average typing speed.
Frequently asked questions
Comment est calculé le score ?
Chaque groupe de cinq caractères corrects, espaces compris, compte comme un mot. Le résultat est affiché en mots par minute.
Does it work with an AZERTY keyboard?
Yes. The test reads the characters you type, so any keyboard layout works.
Can I ignore accents?
Yes. Turn on "Ignore accents" and é, è, ç and other accented letters are accepted without their accents.
