How to type faster
- Learn touch typing. Typing without looking is the single biggest jump in speed. Our free lessons start with the home row.
- Accuracy first. Every mistake costs a whole word. Typing slightly slower with fewer errors almost always gives a higher WPM.
- Keep a steady rhythm. An even pace beats fast bursts followed by pauses.
- Read ahead. Look at the next word while you are typing the current one.
- Practice a little every day. Ten minutes daily works better than an hour once a week. The Word Rain game makes it fun.
Fair, private and free
The test runs entirely in your browser. Words are picked at random from the most common English words, so every test is different and results are comparable with other typing tests. Nothing you type is sent to a server, and your scores stay on your device. Teachers can use the typing test for kids in class without any student accounts.
Frequently asked questions
What is WPM?
WPM means words per minute. In typing tests a "word" is any five characters, including spaces, so results are fair whether the text has long or short words. Your WPM counts only correctly typed words.
What is a good typing speed?
The average adult types about 40 WPM. 50–60 WPM is above average and enough for most office jobs, 70–80 WPM is fast, and over 100 WPM is professional or competitive level.
What is the difference between WPM and raw WPM?
Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong. WPM (also called net WPM) counts only correctly typed words. A big gap between them means slowing down a little would raise your real score.
Can I fix mistakes?
Yes, use Backspace to fix the word you are typing. Once you press Space the word is final, just like in most standard typing tests.
Is my result saved?
Your personal best and recent results are saved in your own browser so you can track progress. Nothing is uploaded to our servers and you do not need an account.
Can I get a typing certificate?
Yes. After any test, type your name and click "Download certificate" to save a certificate image with your WPM, accuracy, test length and the date.
